Ralph (J-6) was named after former Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro, a leading advocate for whales and the man largely responsible for stopping orca captures in the 1970s. In 1984, he became the first whale adopted through The Whale Museum. At a ceremony to launch the Museum's Orca Adoption Program, the adoption certificate was given to The Honorable Ralph Munro as the representative of the people of the state of Washington.
