THE LIVING BITE

❃ Drifting through the dark waters of the open ocean, the cookiecutter shark is a small predator with one of the most unusual feeding strategies in the sea. Its compact, cigar-shaped body is dark brown above and lighter beneath, with a distinctive glowing underside that helps it blend into the faint light filtering down from above. Beneath its rounded snout are rows of sharp, triangular lower teeth, giving this little shark an appearance far more formidable than its size suggests.

❃ Rather than tearing apart its prey, the cookiecutter shark takes perfectly round plugs of flesh from animals much larger than itself. It attaches to whales, dolphins, seals, large fish, and even submarines with powerful suction from its lips before rotating its body and slicing through tissue with its lower teeth. The resulting circular wounds are so characteristic that they inspired the shark's common name, resembling the clean cut made by a cookie cutter.

❃ Living throughout tropical and subtropical oceans, the cookiecutter shark spends the daylight hours in deeper water before rising toward the surface at night to hunt. Its glowing underside helps disguise its silhouette from predators and prey alike, while its dark upper body disappears into the depths when viewed from below. Small, elusive, and armed with an extraordinary feeding technique, it is a remarkable reminder that some of the ocean's strangest predators are hiding far beneath the surface.
