Visiting The Whale Museum

The Whale Museum is located in downtown Friday Harbor on San Juan Island in Washington. San Juan Island can be reached by ferry, by airplane or by private transportation. The museum is just three blocks from the ferry landing. For help planning your visit, visit the San Juan Islands Vistors Bureau website.

When you visit The Whale Museum, you enter a place that is a delightful combination of science and magic!

Gallery of Whales
In the Gallery of Whales you'll learn about the natural history of marine mammals, with a special focus on the orcas of J, K and L pods living in the waters of the San Juan Islands.

You'll find a fascinating collection of exhibits, artwork, models, and artifacts, including real whale skeletons and a family tree of the resident orcas. You can also listen to the "songs " of various species of whales in the Whale Phone Booth, and watch the free, 30-minute video on Pacific Northwest orcas, showing continuously.

View a full-screen panoramic video (recommended for computers with a broadband connection) of a portion of the Gallery of Whales or a smaller version (for computers with slower connections). These images also require the free QuickTime 5.0 or greater plug-in.*

Group Tours
The Whale Museum is a great place for tour groups! Although your group can easily appreciate the Museum on its own, a guided tour with our knowledgeable educators can make your visit even more fun. Click here to learn more about group tour rates or call (360) 378-4710, ext. 23 to make a reservation.

Programs
In addition to exhibits, The Whale Museum is also a "programs" museum! Among them are the Soundwatch Boater Education Program, the Orca Adoption Program, the Marine Naturalist Training Program, the Whale Hotline, and the San Juan Islands Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
