Skana (L-79) is a word that means "killer whale" in the language of the Haida, a tribe from the northwest coast of British Columbia. When Skana (L-39) was three years old, his mother Spirit (L-22) flipped him on his back while playing and researchers were able to identify him as male. Skana (L-79)'s younger brother Solstice (L-89) was born in 1992. The two were often seen rolling around together and playing.
