Raggedy (K-40) was named for the ragged edges on her dorsal fin which first appeared in 1976 from unknown causes. When the studies of the Southern Resident killer whales first began Raggedy (K-40) and her family were believed to be members of L Pod so her alpha-numeric designation was actually L-40. As the study continued over the years, this family started to spend more and more time with K Pod until, around 1985, the lead researcher decided to reassign them to K Pod. The numbers in their alpha numeric designations remained the same but the pod letter was changed.
