K-1 was named Taku, which means "spirit wind" in the Tlingit language. He was probably one of the easiest whales in the Southern Resident Community to identify. He was captured in 1973 and kept for 2 months. Before Taku (K-1) was set free, he had two notches cut into his dorsal fin for easy identification and was fitted with a radio transmitter to track his movemnets.
