Leo (L-44) is one of the few whales to get a name change. "Cleo, known to scientists as L-44, is the nine-year old daughter of Olympia (L-32) and the sister of Spirit L22 and Disney (L-56). She is a member of LPod, a group of 50 orcas in Greater Puget Sound." This was part of Leo's biography from 1984. Imagine everyone's surprise when Leo (L-44) 's dorsal fin began to sprout in 1987 and Cleo became Leo!
